Providence, a community of homes built one on top of another

Providence, a community of homes built one on top of another

With all the land that was available 150-200 years ago, many ask, why Providence's old homes were built so closely together. A typical East Side house lot is just 5,000 square feet. One explanation is that, even back then, city people wanted to be close to where the action was. That meant living within a comfortable walking distance to the center of things. The compact street layout in Providence's historic district, still promotes walking as a very reasonable means of transportation. On the East Side you see lots of people walking! . . . Walking, meeting, interacting - experiencing the East Side community along our old brick sidewalks. Imagine being able to comfortably stroll from home to fine restaurants, museums, theatre, library, parks, waterfront, school and possibly even work. What a great new concept!

. . . . Welcome to the East Side of Providence!
